My Thoughts on the Movie "Overboard" from 1987 (Contains Spoilers)
Visual Description: A woman addresses the camera. She's dressed in a black, floral print sundress. She has brown hair worn in a high bun, and wears blue-rimmed eyeglasses that help her to see. She uses her hand movements, facial expressions, and vocal intonations to help express herself. There's a dark blue cabinet and grey curtains behind her.
Description: I watched the movie "Overboard" from 1987 on YouTube with my significant other. I was the one who picked it out. It was a free movie (at least at the time of recording in my geographic location), and I was looking for something for us to do together that wouldn't cost money. I liked the promotional art/poster for it, and thought it looked intriguing.
I feel like the film didn't necessarily age well. I don't think that the script itself would work at any time more recent than the '80s, and even then I think it's only plausible due the rural setting. I think that nowadays, if you're trying to bring someone with amnesia home from a hospital, that a medical facility would require actual legal documentation, rather than just an anecdote about a birthmark. Also, in the modern era there's social media and such, so I suspect that if the movie took place in the 2010s or 2020s, that the public would be able to identify someone as self-obsessed as Joanna based off of social media history.
Also like, I think that essentially kidnapping someone with amnesia is a bad thing. I feel like this movie essentially romanticizes kidnapping. It's got the same exact issue as "The Man Without a Heart" novel by Ruby M. Ayres. Even if the characters supposedly grow as people over time and such, their romance was built on the foundation of kidnapping, and so I am not sure if it can ever truly be consensual.
The whole found family dynamic was wholesome, though. I feel like the character of Joanna/Annie had amazing character growth. Her character arc reminded me a lot of King Roughbeard/King Thrushbeard, which is an old Grimm's fairy tale. I feel like she was an awesome step-mother, and I can't blame the children in this situation, as their dad was the one who came up with the idea of lying to Joanna, not them.
To be honest I enjoyed the movie, but I don't think that anyone should ever model their relationships off of it. It was worth watching once, but I probably wouldn't go back and re-watch it again. Also, despite the "PG" rating, I do NOT think that it's suitable for children. I think that the movie is really only suitable for adults, not only because of the unhealthy relationship dynamic, but due to the inclusion of a bedroom scene.
