Disability Representation Done Wrong: Service Petpets
Visual Description: This video was recorded in OBS. It contains window capture footage of the Neopets Facebook feed, as well as window capture footage from the ADA.gov website. There is webcam footage of a woman in the bottom right-hand corner of the screen. She gives her commentary and opinions in this video. She's surrounded by a wooden picture frame, which helps to separate her from other parts of the screen. A photograph of a field of dandelions has been used as an overall background, filling in any blank spots in the video.
Description: I personally felt unhappy about the Neopets Service Petpets post. As someone with autism, I really want people to be educated on the Americans with Disabilities act, and I want representation around disability to be well-researched and accurate to people's lived experiences. I felt that the choice to represent a service petpet with a vest, instead of by performing a task for a character with a disability, was a suboptimal decision. I also didn't like how both "service petpet" and "emotional" were used on the vest, as service animals and emotional support animals have different legal meanings in real life. I also thought it was a confusing choice to have a Kadoatie (which resembles a cat) as the representative of a service pet, as in my country service animals are either dogs or miniature horses. I'm not a lawyer, and this is not legal advice. This is simply my commentary as an autistic woman living in the United States.
Note: My apologies for the audio quality. I found out that my audio input got changed from my preferred mic to "default" in OBS. Unfortunately this means that my audio quality on this video is not the best.
