Review for This War of Mine (2016)

This War of Mine (2016) is a war survival game based on the Bosnian conflict - but rather than putting you in the role of those fighting you take control of a group of civilians trying to survive until a ceasefire is called.

The main goal of This War of Mine (2016) is to survive and to do that you need to scavenge for tools, build equipment, create warmth and have enough food to outlast even the coldest winter. Occasionally you may be visited by a stranger, either wishing to trade valuable items, or even asking for a favour which may then reward you with items or a much needed morale boost.

This War of Mine (2016) follows a day and night cycle with the daytime being used to improve your shelter, make equipment, feed survivors etc and the nighttime being used to scavenge nearby locations for material and items. You also need to decide on what your other survivors should do during the night, should they get some needed rest or do you place them on guard against scavengers. Not only that but some locations may need to be visited several times in order to be picked clean and some areas may already be occupied by other people who may or may not be hostile towards you - so stealth is very much in the back of your mind all the time.

Periodically you may experience events that change up the game, from an outbreak of violence to heavy snowfall - which can both limit access to certain parts of the map several days, and force you to scavenge an area you would normally avoid. On top of that morality choices also make up a large part of the game and all the actions you undertake subsequently contribute to the mood of the group, with every action that you take having some kind of price.

Graphically This War of Mine (2016) is simplistic, relying on black and white colours to intensify the bleak atmosphere, and this helps to capture that warzone feeling. It also offers further replayability - with its 13 standard scenario's to complete and even an option to set up a custom game, in which players can set up the game length, scarcity of resources and amount of survivors.

Even the addition of the extra content called The Little One's, which adds children into the game, adds to the realism and forces the player to consider what to do with people entirely dependant on others.

Ultimately This War of Mine (2016) is a brilliant game providing a unique playing experience that keeps you on the edge of your seat throughout, where one wrong move could be disastrous.
