Review for Beyond Two Souls (2015)

Beyond Two Souls (2015) is an interactive action adventure tale centred around Jodie Holmes - a seemingly innocent girl, who has been tethered to an otherworldly entity call Aiden. Whilst some may see Jodie as a psychic, with objects floating around the place, her and Aiden support each other rather nicely, and Aiden serves as Jodie’s guardian angel, healing her, hurting her enemies and generally being her friend.

When starting Beyond Two Souls (2015) you have a choice to play events in chronological order, or as the director originally intended out of sequence -personally I feel that the chronological approach is better as you get to witness Jodie’s development over 15 years without it feeling disjointed and leaving you with burning questions along the way. For example why in one sequence your storming an embassy and then immediately afterwards playing with dolls as a young Jodie.

Let’s not forget Aiden, who is Jodie’s otherworldly companion, and who can interact with the environment, scope areas out with putting Jodie at risk and allow Jodie to experience flashbacks from enemies. What’s best most of all is that Aiden can be controlled by another person if playing cooperatively or yourself with a simple press of a button, if playing alone.

Quantic Dream’s trademark style is also present in Beyond Two Souls (2015) with actions sequences being handled by button prompts, and directional movement of the controller - making full use of the PS4’s motion sensing technology. Whilst most interactions don’t have major impacts to the plot it does allow the player to mould Jodie and Aiden into either a vengeful or forgiving duo.

Beyond Two Souls (2015) stands out as an appealing adventure with some minor flaws, specifically towards its limited replayability and sometimes confusing fight controls. If you enjoyed this review then please don’t hesitate to leave a like, comment, share and subscribe for more content.
