After defeating Murad Bey at the Battle of Samhoud in January 1799 and securing control over most of Egypt, Napoleon turned his attention towards Jezzar. He aimed to prevent the Royal Navy from using Levantine ports such as Acre, Haifa, and Jaffa, incite a revolt among the Lebanese and Syrian Christians against the Turks, and consider future campaigns towards Constantinople or India. However, despite his ambitious aspirations, it is unlikely that Napoleon intended to march beyond Acre with his limited force of 13,000 men. Even if Acre had been captured and local support gained, the logistical challenges and vast distances would have made it impractical to invade either Turkey or India. Napoleon's claims of marching to India with the assistance of Indian rulers were likely mere fantasies inspired by the conquests of Alexander the Great. The logistics of such a journey spanning over 2,500 miles through various countries would have been insurmountable.
