According to the tales, Black Annis resided in a cave called Black Annis's Bower in the Dane Hills near Leicester. It was said that she carved the cave out of sandstone using her long and sharp nails. A pollarded oak tree grew at the entrance of the cave, where Black Annis would hide and ambush unsuspecting children. She would carry them off to her cave, drain their blood, consume their flesh, and then hang their flayed skins on the oak tree to dry. It was believed that she wore a skirt made from the skins of her victims. Local shepherds often blamed any lost sheep on her.

By the late 19th century, the cave of Black Annis had begun to fill up with earth, and it is now covered by a housing estate that was built after World War I. According to a 19th-century eyewitness, the cave was approximately 4-5 feet wide and 7-8 feet long, with ledges of rock serving as seats on each side. There was a rumor of a tunnel connecting Black Annis's Bower with Leicester Castle, allowing her to freely roam its length.
