In January 1799, Napoleon sent a letter to Tipu Sahib, who was Britain's prominent adversary in India. In the letter, Napoleon proclaimed his imminent arrival on the Red Sea shores with a powerful and unbeatable army, driven by the desire to liberate India from British domination. However, the letter was intercepted by a British cruiser, and as a consequence, Tipu Sahib was killed during the capture of his capital, Seringapatam, by the British Lieutenant-General Sir Arthur Wellesley in May. It is likely that Napoleon's intention was to disseminate disinformation since he was aware that his letters were falling into enemy hands.
