The Nebula Cosmos 4K SE is a powerful projector featuring 1,800 ANSI lumens of brightness, using a combination of LED and laser as its light source. Equipped with the Vision Master image processing engine developed by the manufacturer, it promises particularly natural colors. However, the Cosmos 4K SE is not the lightest of projectors, weighing in at 4.3 kilograms.
Setting up the projector is relatively simple. Users must first connect the device to a WiFi network, set up a Google account, and log into any apps they have subscriptions for. One of the most anticipated features is Netflix compatibility, which many smart projector enthusiasts have long awaited. The setup can be completed through the Google app on iOS or Android devices. The integration with Google TV also enables the use of Google Assistant. By assigning the Cosmos 4K SE to a specific room, users can easily control the projector and differentiate it from other devices in the home. The initial setup takes just about four minutes, after which users can start watching their favorite content. Google touts a vast selection of apps available on Google TV projectors, though most users will likely stick to popular streaming services like Amazon Prime, Disney+, and Paramount+.
The Nebula Cosmos 4K SE is part of a growing category of smart projectors that function without the need for external devices. However, it is compatible with gaming consoles like the PlayStation 5, making it a great option for gaming in 4K resolution. The projector can create a large image even from short distances, with 1,800 ANSI lumens providing enough brightness to reach a screen size of 120 inches or more. In fact, Nebula claims the projector can achieve up to 200 inches, turning any large space, like a barn, into a true home cinema. Although the maximum screen size has not been tested extensively, even on smaller screens, the projector displays up to 1.07 billion colors with impressive clarity.
Beyond entertainment, Google TV also offers a selection of games, ranging from action-packed titles to story-driven adventures. This feature adds to the versatility of the Cosmos 4K SE, making it suitable for parties and other gatherings where users can project games, movies, or TV shows. The 4K resolution ensures that images are sharp and colors are rendered naturally, without overly warm tones. The projector lives up to its name as a "smart" device, with IEA 4.0 technology handling autofocus, keystone correction, and object avoidance automatically. These features are standard in many modern projectors, but IEA 4.0 also includes color adjustment based on wall color, which is particularly useful for those who don't have a projector screen or a white wall. This technology allows users to project images in impromptu locations without needing to repaint a wall for better visibility. Additionally, IEA 4.0 includes eye protection, dimming the light source if someone walks in front of the lens, preventing potential eye damage—a crucial feature for households with small children.
A key question is whether current Nebula Cosmos 4K users should upgrade to the SE model. For frequent Netflix viewers, the answer is likely yes, as the SE model offers direct compatibility with the popular streaming service. However, for those less reliant on Netflix, the upgrade may not be necessary. The original Cosmos 4K, which was released in May 2024, is still a highly capable device. As noted by Timm Mohn, the original model is by no means outdated. The software can be easily updated using a dongle, though this option is not available with the SE model. Regular app updates ensure that applications remain functional for years, and the long-lasting light source, a combination of LED and laser, guarantees that the Cosmos 4K SE will provide excellent entertainment for the foreseeable future.
Priced at €1,499.99, the Nebula Cosmos 4K SE is available for purchase from the manufacturer. While its hefty price tag may give some buyers pause, the blend of high-quality visuals, smart features, and flexibility makes it a strong contender in the home entertainment market.
