Get behind the wheel of spectacular vehicles using VR headsit and compete to unleash your adrenaline in Need for Speed Payback, saga that returns after a short break with some interesting developments that we will discuss in our analysis.

This time we have a story that tells us about Tyler Morgan, a guy who along with his band Fortune Valley aims to take revenge on The House, the evil society that is in charge of the casinos and the police of the city. The bets are high in this paradise of the gamecorrupto and The House always wins. Playing in various events such as Tyler, Jessica Miller or Sean McAllister, we have to earn the respect of the clandestine world of the Fortune Valley and play races until the House is demolished once and for all.

The plot itself is nothing special, but the missions we do in this mode are very fun, with scripts prepared to surprise the player and various objectives that bring variety to their development. The biggest problem is that this type of racing is scarce, which is a pity, because they make the game more interesting and entertaining. We really liked the personality of the three protagonists, who are very charismatic and have different driving styles.

Need for Speed Payback is an arcade title that takes place in the open world of Fortune Valley, inspired by the city of Nevada, United States. There is a multitude of tests, battles against different bands, secondary tasks and tunning that assure a lot of fun, although perhaps the novelties feel a little scarce.

The mechanics have not changed much with respect to the last installments of the franchise, with a control system somewhat rough that is based on skids. We have again a nitro that, after using it, is filled little by little and the possibility of crashing against certain rivals to get them out of the road, an aspect that fans of the Burnout saga will know. What we did like is the possibility of making a bet before each race to try to get more money.

In terms of tests we have the events against the bands, which are divided into five types: Race, SUV, Acceleration, Skid and Escape. Each of them needs a car of the same class that we can buy in their respective dealership or the cars that we assemble from the scrapyards, so our garage has to be very diverse. All can be repeated as many times as we want to get more money and Speed Cards with which to improve the vehicles, by completing them they unlock other events and have a recommended level to face them. On the other hand, there are the activities, which are tests that we carry out while touring the city and that allow us to unblock bodywork for the vehicles that later it is necessary to buy.

By winning events we get money, which as we said we can expand with bets, a Speed Card to choose between three random and reputation to level up, which makes us better known by the city. We can also compare our results with other players to try to beat their scores.

One of the novelties is that when completing certain missions we get the location of vehicle chassis of the scrapping that we have to look for with a map track. Once we get it, we have to repair it with four different parts that we also have to locate with a map, with small hearing aids when we are near them. Normally we have to take a detour until we find a place where we can jump to get to them, this path being predetermined and with invisible barriers. Once we are all able to assemble the vehicle in question of the class we want and improve it.

Personalization is still very present in the game. In the garages we can modify the external appearance of our vehicle with the parts we have unlocked, paint it and add multiple vinyl to decorate it, as well as change the Speed Cards of each vehicle. There are many possibilities when it comes to decorating them, but we thought that it could have given much more of itself. On the other hand are the workshops, which allow us to buy the Speed Cards to improve the attributes of our vehicles, changing these contents every so often.

Need for Speed Payback is still as fun and entertaining as its past deliveries, running its formula pretty well. The downside is that the news feel a little scarce, being the best of these the few main missions in history. We think that with a little more time and dedication a more rounded product could have been achieved, since although it offers many possibilities, it does not stand out in any of them. If you liked the previous installment and the break of the saga left you wanting more, Need for Speed Payback does not disappoint, although you should look for something really innovative.
