Netflix has launched a game controller app for iPhone as part of its efforts to venture into the gaming industry while maintaining its current subscription and ad-based business model. The “Netflix Game Controller” app, available on the iOS App Store, allows gamers to use their iPhones as controllers when paired with their TV to play games through Netflix’s service.
However, specific information about which games will be available on TV is yet to be disclosed. The company presently operates five gaming studios globally, led former executives from Activision Blizzard and Zynga, tasked with developing various types of games.
When contacted TechCrunch, Netflix declined to reveal detailed plans or timelines for its gaming service. However, the company’s executives have previously stated that there will be no separate gaming subscription tier. Instead, gaming will be included in existing subscription packages. This integration could present significant opportunities for brands to engage and advertise within Netflix’s gaming environment.
According to Mike Verdu, Netflix’s VP of Games, the aim is to provide added value to subscribers without replacing traditional gaming consoles. He emphasized that the gaming service will have a different business model and hopes it will become a natural way for users to play games wherever they are. He also mentioned Google’s cloud gaming service, Stadia, acknowledging its technical success but highlighting limitations in its business model, which led to its closure in January of this year due to a lack of users.
Presently, the games offered Netflix’s studios primarily consist of simple mobile games, some featuring iconic characters like the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Lara Croft, and Sonic the Hedgehog. The reality show “Too Hot to Handle” even has two games based on it. Netflix has plans to launch around 40 games this year, with 16 developed in-house and an additional 70 games in development with its partners.
