Cotton Rock 'n Roll: Superlative Night Dreams
Cotton Fantasy: Superlative Night Dreams, known as Cotton Rock 'n Roll: Superlative Night Dreams (コットンロックンロール) in Japan, is a shoot 'em up video game developed by Success, released in 23 December, 2021 for the Sony PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch, with versions for PC and Arcade coming at a later date.
Story
Something sinister is in the making, the Willows are vanishing from Fairyland and the Fairy Queen asks Silk to seek the witch Nata de Cotton for help. For a lifetime all-you-can-eat willow supply, as she has an insatiable craving for them, Cotton is willing to help out her old friend and embark on another adventure together.
Gameplay
Cotton Fantasy plays much like previous games in the series, with its systems being mostly carried over from Cotton Reboot!. In addition to the traditional side-scrolling stages the game also have behind-view on-rails levels similar to Panorama Cotton and Rainbow Cotton. The Jewel Fever mechanic from Reboot was reworked, with items now dropping from enemies whenever they are hit with magical spells.
This time, each of the playable characters have their own unique gameplay mechanics:
•Both Cotton and Appli have the traditional Cotton-style gameplay, each of them having their own unique magical spells. While Cotton has the option fairies similar to the first game, Appli utilizes the capture bubble from
Cotton 2.
•Umahara Kawase's gameplay is also similar to Cotton 2, with her being able to capture and toss enemies with her fishing rod. Since her regular shots are fairly weak, her gameplay revolves mostly around the fishing rod mechanic.
•Luffee, unlike other characters, has only a single spell type, having more of a straightforward, beginner type gameplay compared to the other characters.
•Ria Saeba utilizes the "Buzz" system from Psyvariar, with her shots leveling up by grazing on enemy's bullets. She only has her main shot, with no bombs or magic spells.
•Vein utilizes the time mechanics from Starfighter Sanvein; instead of lives, she has a timer which constantly ticks down and more or less acts as a life gauge, with the timer going up for as long as the player keeps shooting enemies down and collecting crystals. She has access to three different shot types at all times which can be cycled at will.
•Tacoot plays much like Cotton and Appli. Unique to her is her ability of launching her staff, which can hit enemies and float in place while shooting its own shots until the player calls it back, working similarly to the force pods in the R-Type series.
