In the year 20XX A.D. Bounty hunters gather in the Gunball Stadium floating in space where a new, passionate survival game unfolds! A powerful and exciting new game taking place on a pinball field. That's Nitro Ball.

Nitro Ball is a top-down run and gun game, the game being set up as a TV game show similar to Midway's Smash T.V., in the game arenas resemble pinball machines including things such as bumpers, spinners, and drop targets and players being able to transform into a large "pinball" with a power-up in order to bowl through enemies.
It includes five levels with different environments ("Strange Football", "Combat Field", "Ghost Town", "Aliens World", and "Space Station").

Players can move and fire in eight directions, as well as use a limited use special attack which covers the screen.
When shot down, enemies roll around before dying, knocking into other enemies and on the various bumpers and walls on the scenery. Knocking enemies into the objects reveals lots of items for extra score, as well as power-ups.
The players are initially equipped with a simple machine gun, but can equip various different weapons dropped from enemies and objects, as well as a power-up which temporarily turns the player into a ball, allowing it to crash through enemies and objects alike.
