On June 7, 2000, now-defunct developer Nihilistic Software released their first game through publisher Activision, Vampire: The Masquerade — Redemption. Although met with a mixed critical response, the game won Best RPG at the 1999 Game Critics Awards, ahead of the series pilot Deux Ex. In 2014, Gameranx listed the game as one of the 22 Best Vampire games of all time.
Controls are mostly performed by the mouse, with LMB used for interaction and movement. Some hotkeys (such as C for character and I for inventory) are used as well.
After sustaining near fatal injuries in a battle in Moravia, Knight Templar Cristoff awakens in a nunnery in Prague to the sound of screaming. Monstrous creatures (members of a local vampire clan) attack the nuns. With his sword, Cristoff slays the vampires but collapses. Although not fully healed, he leaves the next day to the Bonn Silver Mines in pursuit of the "fiends from hell". This, however, draws the attention of other vampires in Prague, and soon he is pulled into a world he little knew existed, let alone understood.
