Noughts and Crosses (Video Game) Match
This is a special video made for an article about the history of video games I made on this French site here: http://www.geekmodeblog.com/2009/01/histoire-du-jeu-video-hier-aujourdhui.html#complet It's showing one of the very first electronic or interactive games (not yet a video game by the definition that Ralph Baer used successfully in court, since it is not run on a standard screen, go there to learn more http://www.pong-story.com/inventor.htm ). If you played on the real machine, which was the EDSAC computer from 1949 (the game was made in 1952), there were three cathode ray tubes, one of them showing the green grid, the other two showing words and register information. The tank part at the bottom left of this video is actually a behind the scenes thing to run the programs on the EDSAC and you would not see it while playing. Another thing that would be far different on the machine is the loading time, just look at the clock to have a feel of how much faster it is in this video. As for the game itself, it is much more of a simulation than a game. I don't think you can win against the computer since it's tuned to always play a perfect game, meaning that you can either lose or tie the match (the match I played in this video ends in a draw). At the beginning, you get to chose which side you're on, the O or the X, which gives the alternate name of this game, OXO. O plays first. It is based on the real game of tic-tac-toe which you probably know. The reason for the creation of this game was for an illustration in a thesis made by its creator, Alexander S. Douglas, for his Ph.D. His thesis was about human-computer interaction. While really being one of the first electronic games, it was preceded at least by a missile simulator game in 1947, running on a system which its creators simply called the Cathode-Ray Tube Amusement Device (you can see the patent for that device and the game in PDF format here: http://www.pong-story.com/2455992.pdf ). If you have requests like for another gameplay video or something, just ask here or on my channel or even by sending me a message and if I can make it, there are good chances that I will.
Note: I had to make this in HD for the text to be more readable, but the resulting video on YouTube can be watched in both normal quality or HD while still being readable.
