Save your Quarters... or Not!: Pengo (Arcade, Sega Game Gear and Mega Drive) 1st Level
Should you save your quarters on this game and play it at home or should you play it at the Arcade? The choice is yours, but you will probably save your quarters either way since Arcades are dying and nearly all good old Arcade cabinets won't be found at the next intersection. Now, Pengo was initially an Arcade game, an old one in fact as it came out in 1982. It was ported to few systems, those mentioned in the video, here we compare the Arcade to the Sega Game Gear version, and then the enhanced remake on the Mega Drive. The Sega Game Gear version is true to the arcade as much as possible on that system. For some reason, the music is not the same (the Arcade version's music is a rendition of Popcorn, an instrumental piece by Gershon Kingsley that was made popular in 1972 when it was remade by Hot Butter), but it's not a serious issue since the game looks similar and plays the same. I think the game is more suited to be played as an Arcade (don't search for it, I don't think any place has it anymore except collectors), a quick one time thing or each time you'd visit the Arcade. The Sega Game Gear being an handheld system, I find it hard to believe that a lot of people would play this game while traveling, it's not suited for a long trip. Then came the Mega Drive version in 1995. It's a Japanese exclusive and it's a so called enhanced remake for the better graphics and sounds compared to the early Arcade game. I find that the original game was more playable than this remake even though the graphics were not that great. It was fun, you had to act fast, it was challenging and exciting, but things have slowed down quite a bit on the 16-bit remake, which as I said in the video, is nearly not a remake since most of the elements of the original game are not there or are completely modified. One thing that is nice in the Mega Drive version though, is that you can create blocks to throw at the enemies. Sometimes, a problem I've noticed is that the enemies look stuck in the Mega Drive version, they stop moving and wait for me to kill them, it does not really happen in this video. My opinion on the remake is not the greatest, you might like it, I didn't like it as much as the Arcade, not that it's an entirely bad game, but it should not be considered a remake or it should have been made as an entirely original game.
