Save your Quarters... or Not!: Wonder Boy (Arcade) 1st Level or Wonder Boy (SMS) 1st Level
Should you save your quarters on this game and play it at home or should you play it at the Arcade? The choice is yours, but you will probably save your quarters either way since Arcades are dying and nearly all good old Arcade cabinets won't be found at the next intersection. Now, Wonder Boy is the first game in the series, which has dramatically changed since the beginning, featuring RPG-like gameplay in later installments. This Arcade also spawned another series called Adventure Island, which started as a port for the NES (not entirely considered a port since they made a few cosmetic changes, such as the main character, because Sega retained the rights) and mostly remained with the same classic gameplay throughout the series, but they later also added RPG-like gameplay. Wonder Boy was ported to many 8-bit systems like the Sega Master System, the Sega Game Gear and the Commodore 64, but here we compare the Arcade to the Sega Master System version. This port is really accurate to the original, the level design is the same and very recognizable, the graphics and sounds were slightly downgraded, which is understandable because of the more limited hardware, but they still look good. They even added a whole new Area, Area 10, which is a bonus if you get all the dolls. As I say in the video, they removed the ability to do a high jump if you're not running, in the Arcade, you can perform the high jump as long as you're moving. This can lead to some issues, but you get used to it. Funny thing is, the modified clone that is Hudson's Adventure Island which you can see here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MJe895R5IB0 was more successful than this port straight from the Arcade.
