For Nuke 14.1 and 15.0 we have updated the GeoMerge node based on user feedback to allow for greater control for artists over how you merge your 3D stages in Nuke's new 3D system and to create workflow experiences that match the behaviour of the classic 3D system.
Artists can choose from one of five new modes:
The Duplicate Prims mode, allows artists to take a prim that exists in the stage and create a new copy with a user defined name. This mode was initially implemented to support a common workflow in the classic 3D system, where you could create one piece of geometry, such as a Card, and then create a branching pipe off of it into the merge node, in order to get 2 cards. With ‘Duplicate Prims’ mode you can recreate this workflow.
The Merge Layers mode is the default. If you have multiple different stages being piped in from their own node branches, say the geometry of a building from pipe A and the geometry of character from pipe B, then this will merge those layers so that they exist together afterwards. This resolves any overrides, so any prims with the same naming conventions will overwrite each other helping to keep your stage organised.

Artists should use the ‘Flatten Layers’ mode when they want to merge different stages together and have the resulting stage be the flattened layer result of the A input and the flattened layer result of the B input. The main purpose of flattening is to manage the organisation of USD layers when saving changes out to disk.
Similarly the Flatten To Single Layer mode is also for managing the organisation of USD layers, but rather than each input having its own flattened layer, this allows you to merge stages together and have everything flattened into one single layer.
We have also included a ‘Deisolate’ checkbox which can be used with the new GeoIsolate node and allows artists to work on an isolated piece of geometry, where it still exists in the stage, but every other prim has either been hidden or deactivated, and once the required modifications have been made, to merge it back without having the overrides of one pipe influence the entire stage
