Numerical Study on the Effect of Convection on Grain Growth Structure in Metallic Systems
Layman's Abstract: This study looks at how convection (the movement of liquid) inside a droplet affects the grain structure during a levitation experiment. Researchers used simulations to better understand how convection and nucleation (the process of new grains forming) affect the way metal grains grow. In experiments with binary alloys (two types of metals), convection causes the liquid to form a stronger concentration gradient, which speeds up how the solid metal forms. The study also found that as convection increases, the shape of the metal grains changes, becoming more deformed. When convection is very strong, small whirlpools form, causing the grain structure to become rougher. In pure metals, the effect of convection on grain shape is less significant because heat can spread more easily.
