Assessing the Cognitive Impact of Insomnia: A Case Study of a Young Adult
Layman Abstract : Why is Sleep Important?
Sleep plays a crucial role in keeping young adults healthy, both physically and mentally. Lack of sleep can lead to problems like anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem. It can also affect thinking, memory, and emotional well-being.
Case Study Overview:
This study focused on a young adult who was otherwise healthy but had trouble sleeping. To measure how sleep affected his brain function, doctors used a special test called the Repeatable Battery for Assessment of (Insomnia) Neuropsychological Status (RBANS). This test helps assess memory, language skills, and overall cognitive function.
Key Findings:
The participant’s thinking abilities were similar to someone with a mild brain injury.
After eight weeks of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to improve sleep, some brain functions, like language skills, got better as sleep improved.
However, memory-related skills (such as recalling things immediately or after a delay) did not show significant improvement.
Why Does This Matter?
This study shows that poor sleep quality can negatively impact brain function. Getting better sleep may help with certain mental abilities, but some effects of sleep deprivation might take longer to recover. Prioritizing good sleep is essential for overall health, mental sharpness, and emotional well-being.
