Predictive Value of Anti-Müllerian Hormone for IVF Outcomes: A Study from Poissy Hospital, France
Layman Abstract : Background:
Anti Mullerian Hormone (AMH) is a protein produced by the ovaries that helps assess a woman’s fertility. Measuring AMH levels is a common way to estimate the number of eggs a woman has left (ovarian reserve) and predict how her body will respond to fertility treatments like in vitro fertilization (IVF). However, there is some debate about whether AMH levels can accurately predict the chances of getting pregnant through IVF.
Objective:
This study aimed to see if AMH levels are linked to the number of mature eggs retrieved during IVF treatment and whether they can predict the success of IVF on the first attempt.
Methods:
Researchers analyzed medical records of 123 women who had undergone fertility treatments at a hospital in France between 2020 and 2022. These women had their AMH levels measured before starting IVF.
Results:
About 44% of the women had AMH levels within the normal range.
After ovarian stimulation, over half (53%) had a moderate response, while 28% had a poor response.
Higher AMH levels were linked to retrieving more mature eggs.
Surprisingly, women with lower AMH levels had a higher pregnancy rate (83%) compared to those with normal AMH levels (39%).
While AMH levels were useful for predicting how the ovaries would respond to treatment, they were not reliable for predicting the chances of getting pregnant through IVF.
Conclusion:
AMH is a good indicator of ovarian reserve and can predict how well a woman will respond to fertility treatment, but it should not be used alone to decide if IVF will be successful. Even women with low AMH levels can still achieve pregnancy, so trying IVF before considering egg donation is recommended.
