Nanrait's Videos Game Music #375 - Ape Escape 3 - Toytown 2

From Ape Escape 3 (PlayStation 2, 2005)

-

I've begun to get interested in Ape Escape and have watched some gameplay from the first one on PS1. It looks very cool and very positive. I didn't realize how much fun the game seems to have with itself, popping in ideas in a fun and free manner. That may not be the case, but that's what it feels like to me. In one level you find a dinosaur the Professor names Dexter. You enter Dexter's giant mouth where an entire level is inside of his bowls! There is a sunken pirate ship inside his stomach acids. It looks like a lot of fun. There is also a surprisingly dramatic shift in the games story part way through, while still being simple. I like that balance a lot, when there is a simplicity and a sincere heart in a story at the same time.

The PS2 games have chunky and cute 3D models that I like very much. The colours are bright and once again it seems like the games have fun with themselves. I like how the animations of faces and expressions are done as 2D stickers on the chunky 3D models. The environments are simple in a PS2-ish way but the art direction is lovely and makes use of the limitations it's presented with. I love seeing that on consoles like the Wii where people have to make atmosphere and places in a more painterly manner, drawing in the light and colour. It's inspiring to me and makes me want to try to make some 3D models over the summer after college is done for the year. I have my college Maya subscription until August so I would like to utilize it while I can. Even though 2D art is what I do the most, I'm glad that there is more 3D stuff like this that sparks a little bit of excitement. I don't know if anything will actually come of it, though. I'm in a big slump and don't feel capable. I feel bad and I don't want this feeling to last.

In terms of the music, I've held on to this song for a few months now. It surprised me due to how beautiful it gets. It starts off fun and nearly goofy but becomes something sincere and part of it makes me sad, in a good way. There's an iciness and a breeze that I've grown to love. It is one of the few songs I have downloaded on my phone because I wanted to save it for later.

I'm going to leave it here. I hope everyone is doing okay.
