Off The Hook - Ebb & Flow: FAN LYRICS (Splatoon 2)
Headcanon time again! It wasn't originally my intention, but as I wrote these lyrics, I began to lean into the idea that before meeting Pearl, Marina had suffered with alcoholism. Experiencing the shock of an entirely new world, and thus feeling like she didn't fit in, Marina began to drink to escape her discomfort and fear, and wrote the original version of Ebb & Flow while in a state of denial. She believed that it was simply the cruel nature of the Inkling world that was causing her such distress, that she would be hated if she were to come into the light, and that the feeling brought by hearing the Calamari Inkantation was simply a fluke. The lyrics for the demo make no allusions to drinking, and are instead about the emotional pain of isolation in a new environment.
Upon meeting Pearl, the straight-edged former punk, Marina was able to move past her reliance on alcohol with the help of her only friend, and together they revised the lyrics to Ebb & Flow to reflect her new outlook.
It takes time. One spare evening may not catch you, but dedication and the ability to make those tough decisions with the help of those who love you will take you someplace better: to the heaven you've made. My eyes are a little damp now, so I think I'll move on.
Thank you to @sallystrings for infecting my consciousness with the "what's stirring in you?" lyric. My brain was all, "oh, that's a clever line in the context of a song about alcohol abuse!" and then I went back and rewatched her Ebb & Flow video and realized I'm not as clever as I thought I was lmao.
Thoughts, comments, and requests are welcome as always! :)
