The shadow was amateur criminologist Lamont Cranston. He had learned “the hypnotic power to cloud men’s minds so that they cannot see him”. The opening to the show, “Who knows … what evil … lllllurks … in the heart of men? … The Shadow knows! His “friend and companion, the lovely Margo Lane, is the only person who knows to whom the voice of the invisible Shadow belongs”. It is a wild and stormy night, and the driving rain slashes at the closed windows of a late model coupe as it rockets along a deserted road miles out of town. Suddenly, there is a blinding flash of lightning and in its eerie light, a strange figure stands revealed at the side of the road. As the car approaches him, he waves the lantern, and Lamont and Margo decide to pull over to see what the man needs help with. He tells them that the road is impassable ahead, but he knows of a detour they can take...
