Older Was Better - A 12 Minute Rant
In a departure from his more measured content, James unashamedly rants in this video essay about how it isn't gaming nostalgia at all. Older titles are better than what's coming out now. He talks about how certain industries peak and how this happened to the computer games industry as we know it over twenty years ago. He talks about how certain moments of genius have yet to be replaced by their future would-be successors in the decades since their release. He talks about why thousands of people are still playing Doom in particular to illustrate this point. That transcendent works of art can defy the ageing process and become indelibly etched into societal consciousness. How this is a thing that happens in gaming and that it should be considered as an art form. And why these moments are happening less frequently (but still are occasionally) because of the modern world and how generational theory posits that people needed to be raised in a specific time in order to create these pieces of art. Lastly he praises the efforts made by some independents and small studios in the present day to revive the design philosophy of decades past. And how we could well be on the cusp of the next work of genius appearing.
