"Only Seconds" A Virtual Reality Open Space Active Shooter Awareness Simulator
It took the Parkland shooter three minutes to enter the High School, prepare his AR-15 and pull the fire alarm, but only seconds to shower a hallway and four classrooms with over 100 rounds that killed 14 immediately and wounded 20 more.
“Only Seconds” is a Virtual Reality ‘Open Space’ awareness application that allows you to safely practice the steps necessary to secure your classroom and keep your virtual students safe under realistic conditions; including the opportunity to judge for yourself if accessing and using a weapon is a realistic means of protecting you and your students.
“Only Seconds” will be available as a free application for educational institutions and policy makers in helping shape effective procedures and training. It will be available this summer in preparation of the 2018-2019 school year.
The app is created with the Unreal Engine 4.19 with inclusion of specially modified SteamVR plug-in to allow a authentic CO2 Airsoft handgun replica to have sensors attached for trigger, safety, gripping and magazine release. Recoil is handled by the CO2 pneumatic action of the upper receiver. However, the goal is not train education policy makers and faculty in the use of firearms in a classroom setting but to show how ineffective they can be and focus more on making decisions on how to lock, barricade and block the view through door window. It will give insight on how layout your room to make in more difficult for a shooter maximize casualties and make inexpensive changes to to structures to impeded at direct path into the classroom.
