In late 2019, the Eclipse Board of Directors approved significant changes to its IP Policy [1]. The most significant change relates to applying a license compatibility compliance review model approach to third party libraries leveraged by Eclipse projects without the need for a deeper dive as is applied to due diligence reviews of Eclipse project code.

Since that time, we have been busy implementing the changes and while we still have work to do, this talk outlines the enhanced approach and the many benefits it provides to Eclipse projects being achieved with automated tooling. Committers only check in with the Eclipse IP Team regarding third party libraries and their IP clearance if/when required based on the output of a license extraction tool/certain variables and prior to formal releases.

Additionally, the Eclipse Foundation has embraced trusting other sources of license data and are excited to be participants of the broader open source compliance movement being directly involved with ClearlyDefined [2] where we are focused on standards and ensuring the integrity of license data for commercial adoption.
