Looking after Your Mental Health in Agile Teams
Do you ever feel like you’re running faster and faster to keep up, can’t take a break, can’t afford to make a mistake – and you’re not even really getting anywhere? Welcome to knowledge work in the 21st century… This is a feeling that many of us know, and some of us have dealt with for so long that health problems arise – including burnout. The statistics worldwide are terrifying.
It shouldn’t be like this though. Humans work best when they are rested, relaxed and happy. But how can we achieve that in a fast paced world – especially when we’re working to deliver technically excellent solutions in short time frames, react to changing customer needs – and practicing continuous improvement at the same time? Is agility more of a cause or a cure for this situation?
In this keynote, we’ll look at what it means to be on the hamster wheel (yes, there are some pictures of hamsters). We’ll see how easy it is to contribute to the never-ending stress for ourselves and our teams, and what effects that has. We’ll see that this is sadly becoming a normal thing for our society – and look at ways to slow down, dehamster and protect ourselves from becoming the next statistic.
