The openSUSE project announced the first beta of the next version of its system, openSUSE Leap 15.3 beta. Check out the full video and find out where to download the distro.

Now, after several delays, the beta version of the next openSUSE Leap 15.3 operating system is now available for public testing to allow the Linux community to get a first taste of the new features and improvements.

What's new in openSUSE Leap 15.3 beta

The openSUSE Leap 15.3 beta comes with packages for the release of SUSE Linux Enterprise (SLE) 15 Service Pack 3 (SP3), including the Linux 5.3 kernel.
This kernel version is maintained by SUSE and features support for AMD Navi GPUs, new IPv4 addresses, RISC-V improvements and compatibility with Intel SST (Speed Select Technology) used on Intel Xeon servers.

With the release of openSUSE Leap 15.3, openSUSE and SUSE have worked to bring openSUSE Leap and SUSE Linux Enterprise closer together than ever before, unifying feature sets, as well as building the openSUSE Leap operating system on top of SUSE Linux Enterprise binary packages .

"We expect full binary identity in openSUSE Leap 15.3 Beta and the Public Beta for SUSE Linux Enterprise 15 SP3," said the developers.

OpenSUSE Leap 15.3 also promises a perfect migration experience for those who want to migrate from openSUSE Leap to SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES), sound enabling for Raspberry Pi 4 and support for Raspberry Pi 400, support for the Xfce desktop environment 4.16 latest and more more.

Among other noteworthy changes, openSUSE Leap 15.3 removes KDE 4 and Qt4 technologies, since they are no longer maintained and replaced by the new KDE Plasma 5 and Qt 5 series, respectively.

However, due to compatibility reasons, some Qt 4 packages may still be available in the distribution.

When testing openSUSE Leap 15.3 beta, please try to keep in mind that this is a pre-release version of the operating system, so do not install and use it on a production machine.

The final version should see the light of June 2, 2021, and a Release Candidate (RC) version should be available for testing in late April.

If you are willing to test the beta version of openSUSE Leap 15.3 and report bugs, you can receive a T-shirt. For more details on this and this version of the distribution, visit the release note .
