The latest Linux-based laptops from Tuxedo offer quite a wide array of options when it comes to displays and GPUs. The i7-10870H CPU might not be the best solution when the AMD Ryzen 5000H are already available, but users can choose among RTX 3060 / 3070 / 3080 Max-Q GPU options plus 144 Hz / 300 Hz FHD IPS displays and even 4K OLED or IPS screens with 60 Hz refresh rates.
Tuxedo Computers, a Schenker / XMG subsidiary from Germany, is now offering its latest Linux-powered laptops with Intel CPUs and Nvidia RTX 3000 GPUs. The new Book XP15 and XP17 models could have benefitted from some AMD Ryzen 5000H APUs, but the available Intel Comet Lake-H CPU options are still a solid choice, although a bit pricier than we would like.
Both 15.6-inch and 17.3-inch models come with largely similar specs, except for some screen options. Even the chassis weigh ~1.99 Kg (including battery) on both models. Here is a list with the shared specs:
Intel Core i7-10870H CPU
Up to 64 GB of DDR4 RAM
Up to 4 TB of SSD storage (NVMe + SATA combo)
RTX 3070 Max-Q (105 W max TGP) or RTX 3080 Max-Q (105 W max TGP)
FHD IPS 144 Hz / FHD IPS 300 Hz display option
GbE NIC + Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.1 (optional)
Port selection: 3x USB-A 3.2 Gen 1, 1x Thunderbolt 3 (DP, no power), DP 1.4 video out, HDMI 2.0b video out, miniDP 1.4 video out, GbE jack, 6-in-1 UHS-II Card reader, headphone + mic combo jack, audio out + S/PDIF jack
73 Wh battery
The 15.6-inch model also gets a 144 Hz FHD IPS panel with G-SYNC compatibility and a 4K OLED with 60 Hz refresh, while the 17.6 variant only gets a 4K IPS screen with 60 Hz refresh. Additionally the 15.6-inch model can be equipped with an RTX 3060 Max-Q GPU with max 105 W TGP.
As far as prices go, the XP15 model starts at ~$1,900 with base configurations including 8 GB RAM, 250 GB NVMe storage, 144 Hz FHD display and an RTX 3060 Max-Q, while the XP17 starts at ~$2,200 with the default configuration including the obviously bigger bigger 144 Hz FHD IPS screen and an RTX 3070 Max-Q GPU. Users can opt to get Ubuntu or the proprietary Tuxedo OS pre-installed, or they can shave off some bucks by choosing no pre-installed OS.
More Info
Linux hardware vendor Tuxedo has refreshed some more of their lineup to bring on NVIDIA Ampere graphics to the Tuxedo Book XP15 and XP17 models. Offering up the latest generation with the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3000 in a "Max-Q design", these two new models pack quite the punch in performance if you're after a laptop that can play almost anything you throw at it on Linux.
Available to configure with exactly what you want, there's quite a bit of wiggle room on the components. The XP15 can give you a 3060-3080 while the XP17 goes between either the 3070 or 3080. There's a few different screens to choose from too between 60hz IPS 1080p, 144hz IPS 1080p, 300hz IPS 1080p and 60hz OLED 2160p (4K). All models come with the Intel Core i7-10870H (8x 2.20-5.00 GHz Eight-Core, 16 Threads, 16 MB Cache, 45 W TDP).
It comes in at 19.8mm thin and under 2kg in weight with three USB 3.2 ports, Gigabit LAN port and WiFi 6, microphone and headphones ports, a Thunderbolt 3 port plus there's also a HDMI and Mini DisplayPort 1.4 on the back. Should be enough ports to satisfy most uses with a laptop.
