Operation Logic Bomb (SNES) Playthrough - NintendoComplete
175A playthrough of Jaleco's 1993 run-and-gun adventure game for the Super NES, Operation Logic Bomb.
I really love this game. It's the second sequel to the Game Boy game Fortified Zone. The second game (great game, btw) was also a Game Boy game, and was only released in Japan.
I've always loved how tense Operation Logic Bomb felt, the absurd and off-putting name nonwithstanding, of course. It's a top-down shooter (though not Smash TV dual-stick style - you get a strafe button instead) that gives you creepy deserted places to explore with heavy duty machinery. Kinda like Aliens, though not really.
Each of the complexes have several floors and must be explored and the exit found through Zelda-style exploration. You have (and find) several weapons that all have specific uses for both killing stuff and manipulating the environment, and there are a few easy puzzles that revolve around the correct use of them. The gameplay is solid, even though the game is so disappointingly short.
The graphics and sound are great. The backgrounds are all the typical industrial settings, but some of the effects are really cool (like having the real world rematerialize as you destroy generators) and the sprites are pretty nicely detailed. The music is all super catchy and sounds much better than the typical Jaleco SNES game, and the atmosphere is great - the opening area has many times reminded me of scenes from Super Metroid. And probably my favorite thing that really sells the mood is the way the story is presented. There is zero text in-game, but you find out what happened and get hints from watching silent video log recordings that show what has happened in bits and pieces. The story is totally shallow, but the way it presents it is pretty fantastic.
I certainly understand how much the title makes this an unappealing prospect, but trust me - it's worth a show of faith. Operation Logic Bomb is truly a buried gem.
