The Game Boy followup to David Crane's classic NES game (A Boy and his Blob: Trouble on Blobolonia) is in most ways pretty similar to the original. The environment has been scaled back - it now all takes places in a single series of caverns instead of the city/sewers/caves/foreign planet settings of the NES title, but the game play is virtually unchanged. You still play a boy that feeds his "blob" jellybeans, and each of these (thoroughly punny) jellybeans will turn Blob into tools that will help him overcome all of the challenges he faces to save Princess Blobette.
Need a key? Give him a lime jelly bean. Need a monkey wrench? Banana flavored will do the trick. Can't breath underwater? The cola jellybean will make a bubble that you can safely explore in.
The graphics and the sound are largely the same as before: the sound effects and music are identical (save for the slightly different sound of the GB's hardware over the NES's), and the sprites all look taken directly from the NES title. The graphics lack any detail, making it look a bit plain, but this is probably a blessing since they don't distract from making out anything important. If you are familiar with Imagineering's work, you'll instantly see the connection here to their other works - especially in the graphics and sound design.
I love this game, just as much as the original. It's not an easy game at all, and I didn't get very far at all as a kid. The older I got, though, and the more I understood the logic behind the whole thing, the more it came together. It's probably in my top 10 Game Boy games, truth be told.
