An English subtitled playthrough of Bandai's 2000 rhythm music game for the Wonderswan Color, Rhyme Rider Kerorican (ライムライダー・ケロリカン).

Played through all four of the main stages. The subtitles are completely my own original translation. I don't think there are any translations of the game kicking around (at least, not that I've seen), so I hope that this brings some awareness of its existence. It's too great to leave buried.

The game requires you to hold the system diagonally, so I've tilted the picture and included an image of the system as a video frame to illustrate this. This also conveniently levels out the text, making it easier to read (but seriously... the Japanese font used here is a annoyingly difficult to read). The LCD screen-door effect is being provided by Retroarch's amazing filter system to make it feel a bit more authentic. I had a Wonderswan Color for years, and this looks pretty close to dead on.

This is an awesome, awesome title. It was developed by NanaOn-Sha and led by Masaya Matsuura, probably best known in the west for Parappa the Rapper and UmJammer Lammy on the Sony PlayStation. Europe also got Vib Ribbon, another PS1 music game, that did vector-style graphics with a drugged-out rabbit that plays pretty similarly to Kerorican.

Rhyme Rider Kerorican was left out of the English-language releases, though, probably because the system it was developed for (the WS systems were awesome - really classic Gunpei Yokoi work!) was never released outside of Japan. It's too bad, because though the game is extremely short and somewhat limited by its four megabyte ROM, it's pretty original, thoroughly weird (you play a space girl wearing a frog costume!), tons of fun, extraordinarily difficult, and a near impossibly cool achievement on the WonderSwan Color. The music is pretty heavily compressed but sounds incredible for the system (a lot of digitized samples running at a time), and the graphics look excellent - they're really clean and colorful and move pretty smoothly. This is leagues beyond the Game Boy Color, no contest.

It feels a great deal like Vib Ribbon, and the personality of its development team certainly shines here like it does in Parappa and UJL. If you want a great WS game that is doesn't require a lot of Japanese knowledge and will last you awhile, you really can't beat this one. Don't let the video's short time deceive you - it will take you FOREVER to get through it. It's damn hard!!
