I realised the other day that my old Outrun 2 - Japanese vs Western X-Box Scud Race tracks video could do with an update, seeing as how annotations no longer work in YouTube. So, I've re-jigged a couple of my previous comparisons into a 3 way split between the 2 X-Box games and the actual arcade version.

I made the old video back in 2015 and TBH I was quite happy to be making a new version. The original wasn't one of the greatest comparisons I've ever made. The footage I was using of the Western game was one half of a multiplayer video I'd made, which makes the HUD look a tiny bit different compared to the normal Vs rivals race. But, the main reason I wanted to remake a Japanese vs West Outrun 2 Bonus stage 1 comparison video is because back then you could still add annotations to a video in YouTube, which is what I'd used to highlight the differences between the Western and (superior) Japanese version of this bonus track. YouTube did away with annotations awhile back, so all the info I'd put in them was deleted. FFS.

Anyway, I've made several split-screen videos before, comparing the actual tracks from the Scud Race arcade machine to the Outrun 2 ones, refining the process a little bit more each time. I also, not that long ago, captured some new footage of me playing on the Western Outrun 2 Scud Race tracks to showcase how they looked in HD when played on an Xbox 360. Rather than totally re-inventing the wheel, I've just added that footage to my most recent Scud Race VS Outrun 2 (Japanese version) video and re-jigged the videos about a bit, to put the two OutRuns next to each other and the Scud Race arcade game on the top.

I've also added in notes on screen to highlight the differences between the two OutRun games. In fact just re-watching it myself now, I noticed another small difference around the 02:01 mark, with the plane in the hangar on the right looking a smidge more fancy colouring -wise, compared to it's Western counterpart. The Japanese Xbox footage doesn't look as clear as the Western version, because it was captured from my soft modded UK Xbox that I can only capture from in SD via an RGB cable. For some bizarre reason Microsoft decided to remove the ability to output in HD from the UK Xbox (and presumably other Euro regions). Why the fuck they thought people in Europe wouldn't want to play games in HD I have no idea. Now that (both) my OG Xboxes are softmodded, I have discovered a way to swap the region of the dashboard bios, so now one of my UK Xboxes thinks it's a USA one. I just don't actually have any of the right cables to actually output it in HD... One of these days!
