A big component of this game is character swapping. This is why I tell to everyone that wants to be at least ok at this game "pick more than one character to initially get decently good at, one main, one backup", as some characters have a much harder time against certain other characters. Zarya is a counter pick to two of the enemy characters, Dva and Genji. Her particle beam cannot be blocked by Dva's defensive field, as it is not a projectile, and Genji cant reflect the particle beam either, as again, its not a projectile. The other enemy DPS did try to counterpick me by going Bastion, but just because you pick a character that is strong against another, does not mean that you will always win against them, you just have an easier time against them. As a Zarya main for tank, you learn how to deal with counterpicks against her. In the case of something like Bastion or Mauga, you just need to be very mindful that your bubble has limited health, so you need to do more dodging and taking advantage of cover, while not going too far, since you still need to soak up as much aggro as possible away from your team as a tank, and you need to charge yourself up with absorbing hits using your bubble. As a tank, decent counterpicks would be characters like Reinhardt, as his shield is very good at blocking the beam, or Ramattra, since his shield is a placeable temporary super high health shield. Zarya is also quite vulnerable vs characters that are long range as well, since her beam is very limited in how far it reaches. In general, if you are having problems against a certain player, try changing characters to something that doesnt have an ability that is completely negated easily by that problem character, that or you need to adjust your playstyle to reduce the effectiveness of that problem character.
