Pips use seed to burry them. Plants in natural tiles thrive even if no fertilizer or Irrigation is brought to them. They basicly provide their rewards for free.
The 2 mods presented in this video make the procedure easier.
You could consider this cheating, but in my opinion the mechanic behind that is already part of the vanilla game - the mods just provide more comfort in using these.
