Pac Man 256 was developed by 3 Sprockets and Hispter Whale, published by Bandai Namco for tablet and mobile devices in 2015 and has now been released on PS4, xbox 1, and Steam. The gameplay is based on the original Pac-Man in that you travel through mazes collecting dots, avoiding ghosts, and picking up items; except now multiple power-ups randomly appear, the ghosts have specific behaviors, and you have one never-ending maze that progresses upward. The new powers ups are automatically activated upon pick up, and add a strategic new element to how to you play the game. Pickups are chosen on the loadout screen and can be purchased with in-game credits found throughout the maze. Fruits make an appearance, which acts as a points multiplier. The controls for this game are simple and well done, the analog stick is responsive and everything feels good to play. Instead of all the ghosts pursuing you like in the original, some of the ghosts act differently, Pinky will rush you if Pac-Man crosses her line of fire, Spunky will start to move if you wake him, Funky dances in a line with his buddies, and Blinky still chases you. The graphics and noise do a sound job of bringing Pac-Man into 2016. The maze randomly generates, and you can set it to change skins if you want something new to look at. The local mutliplayer is fun; up to four players can join, but there is one major problem with the PS4 version, the lack of global leaderboards. Sure I can compare scores with all zero of my friends who have this game, but there is no global standing as far as I am aware of at the time of this review. Overall, Pac-Man 256 is an excellent and contemporary take on the series, but its failure to include global leaderboards makes this game a miss for high score chasers.
