Painting Star Trek TNG Cmdr. Riker (Jonathan Frakes)
Commander Riker, oil on paper. One of my television "comfort foods" is old episodes of Star Trek The Next Generation (TNG). I don't actually watch any other Star Trek series, but due to a nice mash-up of my age, timing, and nostalgia, this show is one that I still like to watch fairly often.
I've done a few sketches in pencil of TNG characters like Data, Laforge, and Picard, but this is the first I've done using oil paint. As with so many portraits, the trigger was very random - I actually saw a meme featuring Jonathan Frakes hosting the show Beyond Belief: Fact or Fiction. I can't remember the exact premise, but it was basically video loop of Frakes saying "nope", "we made it up", "guess again" and things like that over and over. I got a good chuckle out of it.
So, the random tangent was: Beyond Belief Meme to Commander Riker to "Ahh that'd be fun." And sure enough, it was fun! I think I managed a decent enough likeness of him overall. If I were to do it over, I might try for a big more contrast in color values to bring out some shadows. But I think it does look like him.
