Mud Mixer, oil on paper. This was quite a wild ride as paintings go. I intentionally set out to try a completely new approach, and decided for the first time to purposefully lay down the background first. I've done this somewhat on accident before, mostly by trying to rework or repaint things. But this is the first time I've tried this as intentional strategy.

My usual portrait approach is to start with a very thin dark-ish mauve color for outlining and blocking out shadow areas. I progress through skin tones and facial details, and eventually on the back half of the portrait, I add background before completing hair and clothing. But I've seen that many experts, whose videos I regularly consume to learn more, often lay down a background first. Sometimes, they place background around the basic head shape and work inward. Others, they just cover the entire surface, then wipe away a head shape using a paper towel.

Back to the "wild ride" - this experiment quickly turned me into a mud mixer (to borrow a term from Bob Ross). I realized as I tried to establish some skin tones, I had too much thin paint all over the place. I couldn't seem to impact the tones or values I had. It wasn't yet a disaster, but it was heading off the freeway into that neighborhood. I ended up leaving the painting alone for some time to let the paint dry a bit. As it turned out, that was a good decision. Once it was less of a muddy mess, I was able to gain a color foothold and make progress. In the end, I like how it turned out! But it definitely could have gone a different direction.
