Portrait of My Wife, oil on paper. This is a painting I actually did for mother’s day last weekend. The painting was complete before Sunday, but I didn’t have time to edit the time lapse video and share it until now. So, sort of a late holiday tribute to a very caring, wonderful person.

As with the kids, it’s been a while since I tried to paint her. They are some of my first painting subjects…but I struggled quite a bit to capture all of their likenesses when I first started with oil paints. I mean, that does make sense - it can certainly take time to get used to a totally new medium. I’d only ever used colored pencils, so the learning curve was steep.

Anyhow, I finally got the courage to try painting the kids a couple weekends ago and it went pretty well I think. So I had a bit of confidence to try this one of my wife. The first attempt fell apart and became too muddy, so I grabbed some fresh paper rather than try to wrestle with cleaning up mistakes. I think the likeness is pretty solid here! Not perfect, but good enough to where I could confidently do another.
