Bob Ross (@bobross_thejoyofpainting ) oil on paper. I’ve been wanting to try this one for a while. I’m a huge fan of the Joy of Painting and actually watch it quite a lot while I’m painting. Despite the fact that Bob Ross always painted nature scenes and I pretty much only do portraits of people, I’ve actually learned quite a lot from him. I have definitely picked up some practical painting information from what him - pretty important to learn how oils behave when you had never tried them).

But outside of just seeing how this type of paint behaves on canvass, I’ve also long been inspired by his philosophical approach. One of my favorite quotes from him is, “talent is a pursued interest.” He was a big believer in the idea that anyone can paint if they’re willing to put the time into learned and practicing. This message resonates in a major way for someone like me - an amateur without any formal training.

I’ve drawn Bob Ross using colored pencil in the past, but never painted him, so I thought that would be fun. I thought I could feature a Bob Ross-style alla prima nature scene as well, to make it a multi-faceted piece. Well, I’m glad to report that this was incredibly fun! The portrait turned out decently - it passes my primary test in that it looks mostly like Bob Ross. To my surprise, I think the landscape turned out better than the portrait! Or at least, it is more vivid and eye catching. Overall, such a fun piece.
