here you can see the newest version of the battle system present. First, the Panic Time Battle (ATB) is in place. I feel ATB works best for the fighting game elements I wanna use.
Also the Panic Defense System is in play. Using boost points like those found in Octopath Traveler, you can decide how to deal with incoming damage. as long as you have one Panic Act, you can guard almost any attack. 1-2 guard. 3-4 Acts will COMPLETELY dodge most attacks. and 5 Acts will not only dodge the incoming attack, but counter it as well!
BUT you also need Acts to give boosts to attacks.... be it adding more damage to attacks, repeating attacks, or increasing the amount of turns for buffs/status effects. so you'll have to juggle between using them for offense of defense.
Also is the 2 character's present. Main character Mike Barnes and his best friend Ray Groves. Mike has high defense and high attack. his normal attack can have it's damage boosted. Ray on the other hand is really fast and can have his normal attack repeat numerous times with Acts. but he has lower health and defenses.
Lastly is the Panic Button System. you will have to input commands like a fighting game to get the most out of your moves. BUT, there's no penalty if you mess up. but you also won't get any bonuses added to you move. though messing up on incoming attacks can cause you to take more damage, luckily those are pretty easy to master. One example is in some cases, performing the right input can increase damage. in other cases it can give you an extra Act. you'll benefit from learning every move!
