There’s always a bit of difficulty involved in hyping up a game built fundamentally around its narrative and not much else. It may be brilliant - fantastic, even - but how can you get that across? How do you showcase the wit of the dialogue, the warmth of the relationships, the subtlety of the narrative, the pathos of its tragedy, the penetration of its insights, all within a series of three minute trailers? It gets worse if your narrative relies on uncovering mysteries and discovering the lost secrets of the world - how do you give people an idea of what there is and why it’s worth chasing down without giving away the entire game?
This is the dilemma that Polish developers PolyAmorous face in marketing Paradise Lost, and it’s a tricky one. The hard information we have about the game is straight-forward enough: It’s a walking simulator with possible puzzle elements about exploring an abandoned Nazi bunker near Krakow after a WWII that lasted twenty years further than it did in our world and ended in nuclear fire. Simple as far it goes, but everything else about it is a series of question marks.
