Paradise lost is an interactive narrative adventure game in which you assume the role of a child exploring around a nazi bunker in an alternative universe where things did not go quite as planned. If you are able to look past the technical shortcomings of the technical aspect and the lack of polish (no pun intended), there might be an interesting story for you to discover.

-Hit or miss voice acting
-Gamma and contrast in dark sectors
-Tanking framerate
-Subpar texture quality
-Walking/ Sprinting speed too slow
-Relatively short in just under 3 hours
-Lack of quality of life settings
-Navigating through doors and ladders is a chore

Paradise lost is a great example of a game that has an incredible amount of potential, but evidently falls relatively short in the technical department, as well as the quality of the moulding of everything coming together.

Starting off with the positives. I really enjoyed the setting of the game and the tremendous amount of potential it has to offer. The environments are crafted with creativity and attention to detail, from the destroyed statues and the rubble surrounding them, to the offices and the way they are laid out with the various objects on the desks etc.

The story is well put together with great detail in the side stories, that help the player create a more accurate picture of what happened for the world to turn out the way it did. I typically do not care enough to read long texts that I find in games in general, but this one peaked my interest because of the setting.

Lastly, the music left me wanting a soundtrack. Certain actions cues the music in just the right moment, with just the right melody. If I had to choose one thing about this game that I loved the most, it is the audio design in general, but specifically the score.

On to the negatives we go. The voice acting can be give or take on how well it is done. For the most part it is simply satisfactory, with the main two characters struggling quite a bit.

The contrast is done extremely poorly. There second half of the game relies heavily in atmospheric environments and after tinkering with the gamma and brightness, I was not able to generate adequate results. This resulted in my inability to very often be able to see and navigate through the environment correctly and effectively.

The framerate often tanked to an unplayable, single digit frames per second. Optimisation for such a small game is done terribly and I think that the developer must absolutely spend some time in optimising the game through patches.

The game's length is quite short, under 3 hours. It would definitely be a lot shorter if the walking speed, and the sprinting speed, were not so incredibly slow. You cannot toggle sprint so I find that straining my pinkie to run almost at the same speed that I walked was almost not worth it. Lack of quality of life options such as the above, an FOV slider and lack of ultrawide support do not help in painting a good picture either.

Lastly, the most annoying part about the game is absolutely opening doors, climbing ladders and the lot. There is an extremely unnecessary prompt that you have to follow every time you open something such as a door or a drawer. It got old, quickly.

I feel genuinely bad being this critical about a game that has such great promise. From the moment I read the setting of the game, I was hooked and very excited to jump in the game and explore around. The reason why this game does not give the same impressions like other walking simulators do is due to the lack of polish it presents the player with.

The above, in combination with the considerably high asking price, are reasons enough to recommend against purchasing the game. If however you find the game on a deep sale or in a bundle, and you are fascinated by the setting of an alternative outcome of world war, then by all means, do not hesitate to pick this game up and immerse yourself.
