Paragon - Beginners Guide to Deck Building Explained - Paragon Beginners Guide Series
Hey Guys - I am starting a new series for Paragon. This is a beginners guide to deck building and the card system in Paragon.
In order to show everything, I'm going to basically build a deck for Grux. It is basically going to be a random deck - because if I focus too much on Grux specifically or a specific build for him, it will take away from the goal of the guide being generic or usable for any hero selection.
Note: There is some minor math in deck building. It's not hard, but it is something to get used to. I'll have the math done before hand and explain why I make the choices I've made with the cards I have available.
Now that we're out of the way with the introduction I can move right into the deck building process!
Tips - Some tips before we get to building
Pretty much every single deck will have a Prime Helix card, a health pot, mana pot, and either a harvester key or scouts ward. Some builds may decide to bring a harvester key AND a scouts ward to be more flexible - but typically I recommend to simply decide upon your role - whether it's going to be jungle/roaming oriented or laning. Keep in mind that you'll also usually want to pick up the upgraded ward card and perhaps an upgraded stat key. These replace your scouts ward and harvester key 1 cost cards with a 3 cost upgraded version. I would argue that probably the upgraded ward is more useful than the upgraded key. It will take one of your active equipment card slots.
You can only utilize 60 card points in a game. You can discard cards to get a full refund of card points, but you cannot reuse that card or upgrades again.
Another important one that is easy to overlook is that upgrade cards can only be applied to equipment that has the upgraded stat on it already. So for example if a card has HP and Armor, you can't add attack speed to it. You can only add HP or Armor.
Affinities will determine what cards are available to the hero you're playing. There are 5 affinities and universal. The cards show the affinity on the upper left corner of the card. They are grey for universal, black for corruption, red for Fury, green for Growth, Blue for Intellect and a very light grey/white for Order. When you're on the hero select screen, there are small icons indicating that heroes affinity as well.
Note: currently they only display on the hero select screen under the play tab
An easy way to keep track of everything is to ensure the cost of any single equipment card w/ upgrades applied equals 10. So for example, you could take a 3 cost equipment card and put on a 3 cost upgrade, and a pair of 2 cost upgrades. This will bring you to a 10 CP cost card. You have 6 available slots. So you can see where I'm going here right? 10 cost cards, multiplied by 6, equals 60.
There's more involved, but I think that covers the basics. So lets get to building!
Pick an equipment card, and flesh it out with upgrade cards. Usually you want to have each card cost 10 CP when fully upgraded for easy math - but you can build it in whatever way works for you.
Then you move onto your next equipment card. You'll pick that, and then upgrade it with 3 upgrade cards. You do this for a 4 card core "hand". The rest of your 4-6 equipment cards remaining are essentially "filler" or "situational" cards.
You'll also want to make sure you've selected the appropriate prime helix card for the build you are going for. I find the Centurion (increased health) to be the most useful of the 3, but you can choose whatever works for you.
