Path of Exile: Skill & Passive Changes to Know for Open Beta
Path of Exile's open beta is very soon and many of us have been diligently planning out out builds in the lead up. However, through Kripparian streaming the Alpha we now know a few changes that are going to affect bow builds, dual totem builds and even CI builds! If you were planning a build with any of these focuses make sure you know about the upcoming changes!
REMEMBER:
All of these are based on the slightly outdated and unofficial patch notes currently on the alpha realm. They all have the possibility of being changed for open beta but it still gives us a good idea of the direction the developers are taking certain skills.

PHASE RUN:
- Phase Run has temporarily been removed to be redesigned.
- Devs didnt like how it was pretty much necessary for everyone to be efficient.
- In it's place we now have quicksilver flasks that provide 40% movespeed for 5 seconds.
BOW CHANGES:
- Rain of arrows has been buffed with a 20% increased area of effect and with a 20% decrease in the delay. It does a bit less damage now and the quality bonus has been changed to attack speed instead of area of effect. It's also now a level one gem available from Hillock for some classes.
- Lightning Arrow has been nerfed, a lot. Firstly it's now available from level 10 instead of level 1, it seems to have switched places with rain of arrows. The chance to shock has been completely removed as a levelling bonus and levelling now provides a damage bonus. To counter this the mana cost progression is not as severe as before.
- Chain has also been reduced in it's effectiveness with it only chaining to 2 targets instead of 3. I couldnt find this in the unofficial patch notes but i did see this change on Kripparian's stream.
- Ice Shot has been given a 20% reduction in the duration of it's ground chill effect. however, it's also available as a player level 4 skill now instead of 31 as it is currently. I expect it will become a much more widely used ability now.
DUAL TOTEM CHANGES:
- The dual totem notable passive has been changed to a keystone passive and it now has a drawback. Now whenever you take the dual totem keystone your character can no longer deal damage themselves. Obviously this is a huge change as it means you cant use any bows, spells or melee attacks to deal damage. Things like minions and traps still work however so it looks like dual totem users are going to be pure summoners.
- Spark has recieved a very slight nerf. Sparks that have bounced can no longer pierce until 1 second has passed. This just means you will see slightly fewer hits and shock stacks.
CHAOS INOCULATION:
- The final big change going into open beta is that CI has been redesigned. The keystone itself now no longer provides a 50% boost in energy shield AND chaos damage is now applied to your energy shield rather than making you completely immune. The energy shield bonuses are now located in five additional passive nodes, totalling just under 50%.
- This means that builds using CI are going to need even better gear than before to account for incoming chaos damage and that your spec is going to have to be a little more defensive.
