This video has been updated for May 2020. It's still mostly the same as the first version of the video from July 2019, with one major change, discussion of the First Blood pack, plus a couple minor updates.

Path of Exile does not have a 'pay to cheat' cash store.

Overwhelmingly items that are sold are purely of a cosmetic nature and completely optional. However some items add storage space and make trade easier; these are important buys.

My suggestions to frugal players are as follows:

Completely ignore the armor sets that aren't included in supporter packs (like the spectacular Sin and Innocence Armor Set). These are SOLELY aimed at high spend players. Even on sales they are USD 30 with a minority at double that price.

Spend nothing until you've run a few dozen maps, maybe acquired a couple Watchstones. This typically will mean having a level 75-80 character and means you are solidly into the early endgame. Consider the game a free trial until then.

At that point, if you still enjoy the game, decide what you are willing to spend.

$20 option (all prices are in USD):

First Blood supporter pack (200 points, minimal cosmetics, 1 standard tab)

Map tab - 120, currency tab - 60, 2 premium upgrades - 2x10


$30 option:

Choose among the $30 supporter packs available (at the time of posting, these are the Fateweaker pack, or the Darkseer pack; these change every 3 months). Buy the one you feel looks better, it will come with 250 store points as well as some cosmetics.

Wait for a stash tab sale (usually once per 3 weeks). Save your 250 points from your pack until then.

Use the included points to buy a map tab (120), a currency tab (60), a divination card tab (40) and 3 premium tab upgrades (3x10). Those prices are the prices during sales.

$60 options:

Use the included points to buy a map tab (120), a currency tab (60), a divination card tab (40). You have 330 points left.

Now pick one:

- Buy 2x Premium Tab Bundle (12 tabs, this will use every last point)

OR

- Buy 1x Premium Tab Bundle (165), one Herald effect (most are 125 when not on sale), and 4 premium tab upgrades. Herald effects are versatile cosmetics you will use on many characters, and they are 'flashy'.

OR

- Buy 2x Quad Tab (2x 120). Spend the rest on premium tab upgrades and single premium tabs.
