Path of Exile 3.11 - Harvest - Dissecting New Unique Items - Doryani's Prototype and Storm Secret
185Revealed in the original teaser infodump, these two items are among the most intriguing and potentially powerful additions to Path of Exile in a while.
FAIR WARNING: We don't know how rare these items will be. They might be easy to acquire by even a few days into the league, like the Sirus helm Crown of the Inward Eye or the unique jewel Rolling Flames.
Or they might be expensive all league, like the jewel Unnatural Instinct.
Or possibly something in between, like Shavronne's Wrappings - expensive early, more affordable late (but never cheap).
Don't plan a build that is dependent upon them unless you are confident you can acquire very rare and expensive uniques.
In particular, I'd avoid starting 3.11 with any build that relies upon one of these items unless you know you are a 'level 90 on day 2' level of player.
Storm Secret
Secret is compelling on any build that runs Herald of Thunder.
There is some variance in rolls.
Gaming mag PC Invasion has 20 Int, 25% lightning damage, 13% to shock, 43% increased frequency, still 250 damage.
This ring makes Herald of Thunder into a DPS machine including for single target.
Mechanics of HoT
400ms single target cooldown, 250ms global cooldown
I assume (not yet known) this means 1.33 strikes per 400ms (3.3 per sec) in single target, 1.33 per 250ms (5.3 per sec) in multitarget
This allows HoT to go nuts on boss fights with the on-shock trigger. But you need to inflict a shock to get over the line.
Key use case: On lightning damage builds that already use Herald of Thunder for trash 'cleanup' but that want to 'juice up' their HoT and use it on bosses. In particular, you will want to use this on most builds that run Doryani's Prototype, although you will want to 'remove' the lightning resist.
Doryani's Prototype
Doryani's is much more build-transforming. Very few will run it as it will impact your entire gearset, but those that do so will reap the rewards.
First, the word "nearby" is inconsistent in PoE. This might mean "within Cyclone range" or "almost the whole screen"
Be default, requires armor stacking to stay alive, otherwise lightning damage will fry you. Even with armor stacking, lightning DOTs will fry you (you'll take quadruple normal damage). Those are rare in the core game.
The alternative is converting all damage suffered away from lightning - Avian Twins Talisman and Divine Flesh, or Eyes of the Greatwolf (the Rigwald talisman). Probably best bet is the former as you can get an excellent anointed Avian Twins with extreme luck.
Level 1 strategy: -60% lightning resist
For bosses this is equivalent to 110% elemental penetration. For trash, "only" 80%. Awakened Added Lightning is a great support gem and it's only 42%.
Can more than triple your Shaper damage.
Level 2 strategy: Animated Guardian wearing it
The skill Animated Guardian conjures a minion that you can give gear to. It is tanky, but not invincible. When it dies, its gear is lost.
Strong in theory, but in my expectation, too clunky in practice. Very open to being proven wrong.
Level 3 strategy: -60% lightning resist with extensive self-cursing (Curse effect, Shackles of the Wretched, Conductivity, (maybe) Ele Weakness). You can get your own lightning resist to -300% or so with this setup. Setting Shaper's resist from +50% to -300% is a seven-fold more multiplier to damage which will then also make shocks even better.
In all cases you'll be shocking lots, so Storm Secret is a kinda must-have.
If you go with the Level 3 strategy you will want level 21 curses in a Shackles with either +2 to socketed curse gems or +2 to socketed AOE gems (ideally both but this will be super expensive).
