(PCE 60fps) Nekketsu Kōkō Dodgeball Bu: PC Soccer Hen ~ Kunio Sports #15
Fumbling around in Nekketsu Kōkō Dodgeball Bu: PC Soccer Hen, Naxat Soft's HuCard version of the first Technos Japan Kunio series Famicom soccer game ("Nintendo World Cup" on the NES), released a little over 3 months after the Super CD version.
As usual with their conversions, Naxat add more colors and detail to the sprites and backgrounds, while retaining most of the charm of the 8-bit originals; they also shave off some of the rough edges of the original version's control and presentation; I find this version easier to control than the Technos version ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rZnGsl9xXi8 )--although I've still yet to pull off a successful bicycle kick. ; ).
I still really hate that field with the rocks that constantly trip up the players. ; P
If you do well enough (maybe?) in a match, a new player shows up to join your team afterwards; I had this happen twice in this run, but the first time I failed to note their name (in Japanese text, at the left side of their dialogue in the post-game cut-scene where they first appear), so I didn't know how to swap them in for a player in the pre-game team set-up for the following games. : P I tried, and accidentally swapped OUT team captain, central player and all-around superhuman Kunio, which resulted in me getting crushed; fortunately I was able to figure out his name (it starts with a Japanese character that looks like a pointy bracket!) and put him back into the lineup for the next game--and then I did manage to put the second new player who showed up on the field later on, although I didn't notice that he was particularly better than the other players I already had; and I didn't find anywhere the game might show player stats or something, I don't think.
There's also a screen eh I think right before taking the field in each half of a game, with four multiple choice options--my old notes http://paleface.net/cgi-bin/gdb/n.pl?c=479 say these are AI teammate settings; I didn't try messing with them here. In general the AI is all right, although I'll be darned if I can get them to take their own shots on goal effectively.
I managed some diving header goals off their lobbed crosses! That was pretty cool.
I still don't have the knack or timing or whatever to do power kicks consistently though, and eventually you face AI teams that DO--and eh that's about as far as I was able to get. : P
