PCLinuxOS , which emerged from a fork in 2003 from the French operating system Mandrake Linux , later also Mandriva Linux, is an old-school Linux distribution. With the latest software, but without the process ID (“Daemon”) Systemd, it focuses primarily on the desktop PC.
PCLinuxOS is here to stay
PCLinuxOS has been published for over 18 years by the developer Bill Reynolds alias "Texstar", who published the first self-compiled RPM packages for Mandrake Linux via his repository "PCLinuxOnline" in 2000. The operating system enjoys great trust within the Linux community. PCLinuxOS is still very popular because of its simplicity and ease of use.
The US distribution was one of the first to adapt the APT package management system, which is essentially based on Debian GNU / Linux, and combine it in connection with the RPM package management system in the APT-RPM variant with the GTK + -based Synaptic user interface .

Based on the current operating system kernel Linux 5.14.16 and equipped with the two current desktops KDE Plasma 5.23 and Xfce 4.16 , PCLinuxOS traditionally places great emphasis on compatibility with hardware configurations, pre-installed media codecs and support for multimedia formats.
Also especially interesting for gamers
The free graphics library Mesa 3D , which has received various new features for gaming under Linux with Mesa 21.2.0 and is available in the latest version 21.2.5 under PCLinuxOS 21.11, is also intended to appeal to gamers.
The latest version of the powerful graphics library also supports the PCIe technology Resizable BAR alias Smart Access Memory (test) and fully complies with the Khronos test for Vulkan API 1.2 .
Mesa 3D v21.x officially supports SAM on Zen 3 and RDNA 2 and also offers an optimization of the L3 cache of Zen processors, the so-called " L3 cache pinning ", which can also lead to an increase in performance.
Mesa optimizes PCLinuxOS for various games
Several games have received better support through Mesa 3D v21.x, including well-known titles such as Desperados III, Shadow of the Tomb Raider (test) , Nioh 2, The Surge 2, The Witcher, Rage 2, Overwatch (benchmark) , The Elder Scrolls Online and D3ath Stranding (test) as well as Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, WoW, Minecraft, Mafia III, Quake III Arena and numerous other titles.
Conscious renunciation of systemd
PCLinuxOS has always done without the not undisputed init process Systemd and instead relies on a replica of SysVinit as process ID 1, which is the first to be started by the Linux kernel.
