That Dave skip means its possible to face off against the first boss with Peridot. However, there's a few easy ways for this encounter to completely break.
1: You must bring at least one of the 3 main Crystal Gems that you can choose at the start of the game (Garnet, Pearl, or Amethyst). The encounter script will fail as soon as the camera goes to Hessonite if none of them are present.
2: You must bring either Connie or Amethyst to react to Steven naming the monster. Otherwise, the encounter script will fail after you name the monster.
3: I believe you have to enter the battle from the South Trail area triangle door, but I haven't tested that one with a functional team comp.

Peridot has a bit of a problem in that this is one of only two sections of the game she isn't supposed to be able to fight anyone (here and Squaridot's battlefield). As such, the area isn't really able to handle her Pericannons and other contraptions, aside from a few extremely small places that are too far away to do anything. Not sure how her combination attack with Connie (launching mines everywhere) would work. But hey, you can do this fight and that's pretty neato.
